A configuration called a passive matrix is used in some models. With this method, a pixel is turned on by energizing the horizontal and vertical lines in which the pixel lies. A second configuration, called an active matrix, turns on specific pixels by energizing data switches associated with each dot.
Passive matrixes have the drawback of less clarity and "ghosting" of images, as it ~refreshes~ more slowly. The active matrix has much higher image quality, but is usually much more expensive.
